Olga de Amaral

Lin, gesso, feuille d’or et peinture acrylique
105 x 225 cm

A screen of light to recharge one’s batteries. The broad surface lends itself to it. The bed of a golden river. A fragment of solar energy. A panel of vibrant scales.

One’s gaze surrenders to the bedazzlement, plunges into it. The presence of natural fibre in the work engulfs one’s gaze. A reconciliation occurs in the combination of linen, gold leaf, gesso and paint, in the ritual gesture performed by Colombian artist Olga de Amaral. The tapestry interweaves the visible and the concealed, the inside and the outside, the instant and eternity.

The Colombian artist born in 1932 in Bogota, where she still lives and works, chose textile as early as 1954, as a student at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan.

Her weaves are composed of materials, colour and space, combining artisanal know-how, minimalist inspiration and secret vision. This piece fully bedecked in gold becomes a source of light and vibration, like each tapestry and monumental textile installation she creates. A labour of patience and introspection, interweaving the visible and the concealed, the inner world and its exposed double.
