Harvest in Cognac this autumn

Harvest in Cognac this autumn

by Frédéric Bourgoin

Two thousand and twenty, a warm vintage that will be remembered for the early flowering of the vine in the Charente region (on 8th June) in addition to a serious spell of hail which hit the plots of Hiersac, Saint Simeux, Moulidars and Champmillon.

Today, the leaves on the trees are beginning to redden in the Fontguyon valley.

Chestnuts, walnuts and hazelnuts are scattered on the ground while the last figs of the season ripen along the white paths. Autumn has settled in my friend.

In our vineyard, harvest ended on 24th September, after two and half weeks of effort. We pressed those beautiful Trebbiano Bianco grapes in our old basket presses. The juice gushed out, sweeter than usual, slightly sour, with a strong alcoholic potential. Placed in vats after the removal of seeds, this grape juice was turned into wine thanks to the magic of alcoholic fermentation and local yeast.

Only a few days to go and we will obtain the customs license to start the distillation process.

Then, the muted purr of the burners from our 3 stills will signal the launch of their annual 4-month long dance. Straddling autumn and winter. And the new cognac brandy will flow like water...
